Sonic Blueprints

Composing Music for Spatial Experience

Sonic Blueprints places the moving listener at the center and treats paths, thresholds, distance, scale, orientation, and environmental change as musical material.

I developed this approach through years of building spatial music, installations, and augmented-reality work. The book gives that practice a shared language and a repeatable path from observation to Program Brief, spatial frameworks, Sonic Blueprint, and finished work.

The proposition

Music can be built as a place.

When listeners can move, composition gains another set of materials: position, direction, proximity, motion, choice, and the character of the environment itself. This book develops a language and working method for using those materials with intention.

Current draft

The book in four parts

  1. Part I

    How We Place Sound

Direction, distance, motion, enclosure, environment, clarity, scale, and expression.

  2. Part II

    How We Frame

The Program Brief and the eight frameworks used to study and organize a spatial work.

  3. Part III

    How We Compose

The Sonic Blueprint and a set of compositional techniques developed for sound in space.

  4. Part IV

    Techniques and Implementation

Tracking, sensing, indefinite time, calibration, visualization, translation, and documentation.

Part II · How We Frame

The Program Brief

The Program Brief is a concise statement of the project: why it exists, how it responds to the site, who it serves, what it should accomplish, and what can be built.

  1. 01Study the identity of the place
  2. 02Identify the partnership context
  3. 03Define the intent or mission statement
  4. 04Identify opportunities and constraints
  5. 05Consider technological capabilities
  6. 06Synthesize the research into a clear program
  7. 07Set budget and scope

Part II · How We Frame

Eight frameworks of spatial composition

  • Circulation
  • Materiality
  • Light & Shadow
  • Scale
  • Identity
  • Placement
  • Behavior
  • Time in Structure

Part III · How We Compose

The Sonic Blueprint

The current draft develops the Sonic Blueprint as a 23-step design pass. It gathers the decisions made during the Program Brief and the eight frameworks on one working plan.

Steps 1–8
Establish structure
Steps 9–19
Shape experience
Steps 20–21
Assign agency
Steps 22–23
Design time

Speaking

Talks, workshops, and advocacy

I speak about the ideas and working methods in Sonic Blueprints, and about disability, access, mentorship, and creative practice. These subjects meet in the same place for me: who gets to participate, how systems shape experience, and what artists can build when more people are able to bring their full perspective to the work.

Past contexts include GameSoundCon, AI Unlocked, Kennedy Center / VSA, the Harkin Summit, the U.S. Department of Energy, and Catholic University.
